General Mage Skills in RoM

romRunes of Magic spells for the Mage Class

All of the listed skills and spells are for either a Mage primary or a Mage secondary character in Runes of Magic.

The Runes of Magic Mage class has wind and fire damage spells designed to break down opponents. Their skills boost these spells along with stat buffs and items to keep the mage safe in battles (as their armor is merely cloth).

Mages are the magicians and sorceresses of the game, casting exquisite fire and electrical spells with major damage dealing affects. They are great at AoE spells. Many times the mage caster is one of the most sought after in parties, usually second only to the priest. All of the general mage skills are able to be used for Mage primaries and for those that have a mage as a secondary class.

Mage General Skills, Active
These are the skills that will need to be activated or hotkeyed to use effectively in battles. These active spells for the mage give lightning and fire damage with extra opponent weakening skills.

Fireball – A level 4 skill, this will make a ball of fire doing 50 fire damage plus an additional 12.5 damage points for each upgrade.
Lightning – A level 8 skill, this will do a bolt of lightning that does 35.3 wind damage plus 6.9 every level. It will also keep the target rooted for 3 seconds plus 0.21 seconds per upgrade.
Intensification – A level 16 skill, it will give the next offensive spell cast an increase in damage of 45 plus 4.5 per upgrade that will last for 30 seconds.
Silence – A level 20 skill, this will keep the foe silenced for 4 seconds and 0.1 second per upgrade.
Fire Ward – A level 24 skill, this spell will up the resistance to fire for the entire party (and the caster) by 10 for 10 minutes (plus 2 for each upgrade).
Mage General Skills, Passive
These are the skills that do not have to be activated to use, they are always “on”. Currently there is only one passive skill available to the mage in their general skills.

Texas Pistachio

Pistacia texana

Texas pistachio is a large evergreen shrub native to southwestern North America.
****

Texas pistachio (Pistacia texana) doesn’t produce nuts, nor is the fruit edible, but this small beautiful tree (or large shrub) is a great addition to a waterwise garden.

Also known in English as American pistachio, wild pistachio and Mexican pistachio and in Spanish as Lentisco, it is the only pistachio species native to the Americas. Nine other species originated in Eastern Europe and Asia, and another species is native to the Canary Islands.

Unruly but Beautiful
Although it can be a little unruly, creatively trimmed, the plant can really achieve a gnarled and truly original look. It can be single or multi-trunked. The branches may droop, so they may need to be staked at first. As they gain girth and strength, the stakes can be removed. This pistachio species creates an airy shade.

The leaves are small almost bronze or red in the early spring. As the season progresses, the leaves change to dark green.

While the tree is not an evergreen, in warmer areas of the southwest it can keep its leaves all winter.

The plant is highly drought-tolerant and can thrive in alkaline soils. It is also heat-tolerant and can tolerate high salt content. The tree has no pH preferences. However, Texas pistachio does need to have well-drained soil. It can be raised in sun or partial shade.

It is also highly resistant to insect damage.

Birds feed on the fruit, but deer do not care for the tree, which makes it a highly attractive plant in areas with high deer populations.

Males and Females
All pistachios are dioecious. The flowers of Texas pistachio, which form on the female trees, are small white clusters that are not particularly attractive. However, the fruits are showy, appearing in large red clusters in spring which change to black in summer. The male flowers are catkins.

The plant does best in USDA zones 8, 9 and 10, although it has been grown in colder zones.

Texas pistachio trees are available from native plant nurseries. Plant it as you would any other tree, and water well until established.

Texas pistachio may live for centuries (as do all members of the pistachio family).

The genus Pistachia is in the family Anacardiaceae, which includes cashews, poison ivy, sumac and mangos.

Related species of Pistacia texana include Mt. Atlas pistschio (Pistacia atlantica), Chinese pistachio (Pistacia chinensis) and Terebinth pistachio (Pistacia terebinthus).

Edible varieties were introduced into the U.S in 1854, when Charles Mason distributed seeds in California and Texas for experimental plantings.

Racism and The Lord of the Rings

Controversy Over Peter Jackson’s Films of J.R.R.Tolkien’s Trilogy

It is the changing cultural situation, not the original texts, which have led some people to identify possibly racist elements to the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Suggestions that the trilogy The Lord of the Rings had a taint of racism were greeted with disbelief from many, and derision from fans. At first sight the idea looks completely absurd. After all, the books upon which the films are based were written by J.R.R.Tolkien in the shadows of the Second World War. The Nazi state implemented explicitly racist policies towards Jews and gypsies, which culminated in the Holocaust, and though Tolkien always denied any “allegory” or “simple application” of Middle Earth to contemporary events, it is easy to make the connection. If the Shire didn’t specifically represent Britain wartime, it certainly represented what Tolkien felt was best and most worth retaining about Britain. And the character of Sam Gamgee, with his qualities of grit, honesty, and unswerving loyalty comes close to the image propagated by Britain of the “honest Tommy”.

Norse Mythology and Germanic Culture
Thus J.R.R. Tolkien, despite his attachment to Germanic culture and Norse mythology which the Nazi ideology drew upon, is seen by many as having written a series of epic novels about the evil of the Nazi empire. It would seem completely backwards to accuse the works of being themselves racist. Nor does Jackson’s inclusion of predominantly dark-skinned orcs (often mentioned as a hint of prejudice) seem to be an imposition on the original texts: they have not been yanked out of shape to serve a racist agenda. However, the vast differences between the cultural context of the The Lord of the Rings novels, and their modern film adaptations, had led to a situation which makes some audience members uncomfortable.

Given the events of the last seven years, in the context of the “9/11” attacks, the resulting “war on terror”, and the continuing strife in the Middle East, some of the implications of the plot of the Lord of the Rings

feel different. Aragorn and Boromir both stress their ancient lineage from the civilization of “the west”, which needs to be rebuilt for mankind to prosper. This almost feels like a caricature the “Clash of Civilizations” discourse. The inclusion of savages in Eastern clothing riding giant elephants may be an accurate rendering of the books, but they were written in a different geopolitical situation. Frankly, the image of a mail-clad group of warriors making their last stand against a rabble of subhumans with the cry “Men of the West, stand firm!” is enough to give anyone pause for thought.

No Racist Agenda
It would be completely unreasonable to suggest that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote these books with a racist agenda, or that Peter Jackson filmed them with any prejudiced intent. However, works of art do not exist in cultural vacuums, and part of the films could be seen as subconsciously bolstering a discourse in which Western civilization is under threat from subhuman hordes from the East. It’s an astonishing example of how general cultural discourse can overtake and even co-opt works of art as apparently distanced from political reality as a fantasy novel and an epic movie.

General Rogue Skills in RoM

Runes of Magic spells for the Rogue Class

All of the listed skills and spells are for either a Rogue primary or a Rogue secondary character in Runes of Magic.

Whether create to be a thief, a miscreant, or sneak, the class of the Rogue is a pleasure to play. They pride themselves on the dual wield of the dagger and the pure offensive power of their skills.

These general rogue skills are able to be used when playing a Rogue primary and are able to be used whenever another class has a Rogue secondary. Some of the most unique skills are attributed to the Rogue class.

Rogue General Skills, Active
Rogue active general skills are those that will need to be hotkeyed or clicked so that they are used and are not constantly on.

Shadowstab – This level 1 skill will give an added bleed affect with 60% damager per second with a main hand weapon (plus an additional 4.2% per each upgrade). The bleed will cause 5 damage every two seconds for a total of eight seconds (plus an additional 2.5 for each skill level). The rogue must have a dagger for this bleed effect.
Throw – This level 4 skill will cause 100% damage per second (plus 7% per upgrade) by throwing a hidden weapon.
Blind Stab – This level 8 skill will put forth 20 physical damage (plus an additional 4 per upgrade) and will blind for 15 seconds.
Shadow Step – This level 28 skill will make the character go behind the opponent for the ability to use “come from behind” skills.

Rogue General Skills, Passive
These passive skills do not need to be keyed up or activated, they are constantly “on” and working for the rogue.

Projectile Training – This level 10 skill will make the character able to use projectiles.
Off Hand Training – This level 16 skill will have the off hand able to use a one handed weapon.
Agility – This level 20 skill has the ability to raise dodge rate by 2% (plus 0.1% increase with each skill level).
Nimble Hands – This level 24 skill will speed up the attack rate by 2% (plus an additional 0.1% per skill level).
The rogue general skills make for an exciting character and still will give great passive buffs if chosen as a secondary character. With the extra training in the passive list, it really opens up players to using different weapons than what they’d normally wield.

Choosing a rogue secondary is a great benefit to any other class played as a primary, but is typically the choice for Scout primaries to choose.

Resolution by John Meaney

Nulapeiron Volume 3

Resolution the conclusion to John Meaney’s epic Nulapeiron Space Opera trilogy, pitting Tom Corcoran against the Blight an even bigger and nastier version of the Anomaly.

Resolution is the conclusion to John Meaney’s epic Nulapeiron Space Opera trilogy

Much of the last decade has been spent on one enormous trilogy. This year he finally finished off – after six years and fifteen hundred pages – his colossal Nulapeiron Sequence comprising Paradox, Context and Resolution.

With two distinct story-lines running in tandem for almost the entire trilogy, the books are both prequels and sequels to Meaney’s first novel, To Hold Infinity, and include a 1994 short story, ‘Parallax Transform’, as well as sharing a fictional universe with a novella, ‘The Whisper of Disks.’

All three books are set on the subterranean caverns and tunnels of Nulapeiron, at the beginning of the 35th century. The first two are reviewed on this link and here respectively.

Resolution is the conclusion to the sequence, and is the best book of the trilogy, partly because it is shorter and has fewer plot threads than the others. Meaney at long last seems to hit his stride with a conclusion in sight, and does not seem to be so preoccupied with jump-cuts. The Anomaly, a bigger and nastier version of The Blight, has become aware of Nulapeiron’s existence. The Anomaly takes over people’s minds to the extent that they do not even know that they’ve been taken over. Meaney flirts with the idea that maybe Corcoran and his resistance have the wrong perspective, and has Corcoran entertaining similar doubts. But then he nails such dithering toward the end in a scene of Ethnic Cleansing ad Absurdiam. Just to show how nasty it is Meaney has previously loving couple suddenly becoming ruthlessly efficient, and tossing their disabled son into a vat of gunk because he is not perfect, and therefore easier to replace. Dramatic it is, effective it may be; subtle it isn’t.

One of the difficulties Nulapeiron shares with Lord of the Rings, A Fire Upon the Deep and other big-sellers where a plucky David is faced with an all-consuming Goliath is how to characterize rampant evil. To be honest, Meaney doesn’t even try. The Anomaly is big, its nasty, and its going to eat them all. That’s all the characterization the reader needs.

To be fair, Meaney does many things well. Corcoran is an effective lead in the Paul Atreides (from Dune) role, and there’s a huge amount of ‘tech’ on offer, such as arachnobugs, genetically engineered lorry-sized critters that scuttle through the endless caverns at near-supersonic speed. And with the amount of space to write in, Nulapeiron does at the end stand as a real world, with a genuine history.

And the Pilot sequence, at first an irritating distraction, then a seemingly endless second thread, does at last become a coherent plot thread that resolves quite nicely. There’s pretty much enough material for a short novel in the Pilot thread itself, and that the whole Nulapeiron sequence has the whiff of a trilogy more to with commerce than art. And the climax of Resolution reads very much like a recycled version of To Hold Infinity.

But if the reader likes their space opera big and fast and laced with a genuine whiff of the future, then they could do worse than give The Nulapeiron Sequence a try.

Rare Conifer Evergreen Trees

Weeping Blue Atlas Cedars, Lawson Cypress, Giant Redwoods & Others

Plant hunters, propagators, and geneticists have developed rare and unusual conifers. Because of this there is a perfect plant for any site.

To a landscape designer, conifers – especially the dwarf varieties – offer great choices for specimen planting to make the garden special. Mutation is not a favored term when it comes to people. We think of a science fiction thriller, but when it comes to plants it’s a good thing. Genetic mutation in the plant kingdom happens all maplestory mesos  the time for a variety of reasons – bacterial or fungal infection – and some horticulturists even radiate seeds in the microwave to alter genetics. All these things can produce offspring that grow differently than that of the parent stock – and hence a new variety of plant is born.

Some favorite genetic plant mutations to make your garden special are as follows:

Cedrus atlantica Glauca Pendula (Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar) is great for a backdrop for a waterfall, or where an interesting specimen is desired. Blue – needled branches grow out and then flow downward. Bamboo stakes should be used to tie the main leader up to a desired height as subsequent growth will weep downward.

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Gold wow gold paypal  Shower (Golden Weeping Lawson Cypress) is a beautiful small growing evergreen tree that grows in a broad conical form with branch ends that weep. Not only is this plant uniquely shaped but the brilliant golden yellow coloration which does not fade during the summer makes this specimen a top conifer selection. Use this as a backdrop screening plant or a foreground specimen.

Picea pungens Glauca Globosa(Dwarf Bush Globe Blue Spruce) is a bush variety of the Colorado Blue Spruce with extremely blue needles. Growing only 4 to 6 inches per year makes this one a good choice for a wide planter around pool areas or in front yard foreground planters. Because it has such an outstanding blue color which is fairly rare in the plant kingdom, it is especially nice with companion plants of contrasting foliage colors. A beautiful combination of plants are the Picea arranged with the Rose Glow Red Barberry and the Sunset Gold, Coleonema (Breath of Heaven).

Sequoiadendron giganteum Pendulum (Weeping Giant Redwood) is one of the favorite plants of the plant collector, due to its bizarre growth habit. This mutation is nothing like its parent which is the Giant Redwood seen at Calaveras Big Tree National Park in California. The first few years of growth one might mistake this plant for an Italian Cypress, but as time progresses the unusual habit starts to develop. Think of a Afghan Dog with its weeping trusses of hair that cover its body and you’ll get an idea – but better yet – just google Sequoiadendron giganteum Pendulum. Plant this plant where you want a interesting focal plant. For a interesting effect, plant 3 to 7 on a mound spaced with uneven distances apart and spot boulders and floodlights around them.

Cupressus sempervirens Swane’s Golden (Golden Italian Cypress) is a great specimen accent plant where a narrow formal plant is desired. Unlike its green counterpart, this nice clone keeps a nice tight form and doesn’t flop out like the green form. Also, look for a variety called Tiny Tower, which is a tight growing green form, diminutive in size compared to the full size version.

With the exception of the Farmer, Prospector and Forester professions, advancement from the mastery of one tier to the basic level of another is done via quests issued by NPCs. Each quest will have an associated recipe and a set of instructions on where to find certain necessary items. This encourages the player to travel through the MMO RPG world of Middle-Earth.
