Rising Theatre Audiences – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

The darkening financial climate is pretty much unavoidable at the minute. If you’re not queuing up at the supermarket spending 15% more for half a dozen eggs than you would have done five minutes ago, then 150 journalists and financial advisors are lined up round the block to tell you about it.

Fuel costs are rocketing to record new heights and the price of a barrel of crude oil, if you really wanted to buy one, is nearing the astronomical sum of $200.

That, of course, is not nearly the half of it. The slump in house prices and the rise of inflation mean that families with standard mortgages do not have anywhere near the amount of disposable income than they did two years ago. Match this to tightening credit crunch and the future looks depressingly frugal.

With times being so distinctly tight at the minute, surely families are less likely to indulge in expensive little trips to the West End. Or are they? The Sun, amongst others, are calling 2008 the best year for British tourism in years. With this dodgy financial situation looming, growing worries about carbon emissions and a heroically strong euro, many holidaymakers are choosing their vacations a little closer to home. City breaks and long weekends are on the up which means that, despite what you may think about luxuries like West End theatre trips, they may be a lot more economically sound than taking far flung foreign holidays. A night out at the theatre in London as part of a city break may be just the tonic for the bubbling inflation costs.

This, of course, is if the West End continues to offer the same package as they do now. Great glittering epics like the Lord of the Rings or Gone With the Wind use state of the art stagecraft to recreate their vast dramatic landscapes. Expensive hydraulic systems twist, turn and contort the sets to change from one scene to next. Meanwhile, Hollywood A-listers currently grace the cast lists of anything from Mamet to Chekhov and hoist inflated gate prices as they go. In short, some of the more indulgent shows in the West End can afford to ‘shed a few pounds’ so to speak.

The morbid financial climate will mean that families have to cut back on certain extravagant expenses, naturally, but it might be fairer to say that adjusting how we use our money will help us out a lot more. With more people choosing to side step foreign holidays in favour of shorter, city breaks then our love affair with institutions like the West End may not be a one night thing after all, but instead be with us well into the long term.

Nature is God’s art gallery, displaying creations so vividly defined and colorful. Breathtakingly beautiful mountain ranges, waterfalls, lush forests, natural rock formations, glaciers, canyons, deserts, lakes, valleys, rivers and oceans keep us mesmerized and speechless with their awe-inspiring qualities. The Scenicland Helicopters tour experience gives the best vantage point for visitors to take in New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery – right from above. The shimmering sunshine casts a glow on every location during the morning and at evening, the shadows make everything all the more interesting.

Scenicland Helicopters proudly claims a motto “taking you places other people only dream of seeing” and this is no exaggeration. The helicopter tour takes you on the ride of a lifetime, over secretive glaciers, impressive natural rock ranges, beautiful national parks, alpine forests and precious rainforests. The diverse landscape provides a veritable island for explorations and amazement. The movies of the Lord of the Rings trilogy used New Zealand’s magnificent natural scenery for its “Middle Earth” representation and it’s easy to understand why they chose it.

A helicopter ride is very different from that which is offered by a plane. Instead of flying from one location to another in a direct manner, the helicopter lets you make stops to discover and explore hidden treasures of nature at your leisure. The modern helicopters used ensure your comfort and safety and all of them are flown by trained professional pilots.

Some of the natural scenery covered by the Scenicland Helicopters tour include the West Coast glaciers (Fox & Franz Josef glaciers) , Skippers Canyon, Shotover River, Coronet Peak, Kawarau Gorge, Doubtful Sounds, Milford Sounds etc. The helicopter tours can be combined with guided hiking trips, mountain biking, snowmobiling and jet boating.

While you are taking a break to see everything from an “as-seen-from-heaven-” perspective, check out the Greymouth hotels in the vicinity to have a peaceful night’s rest after all that adventure.

E- Games- The New Age Entertainment Sports

In the age of Internet, E-Games is an irresistible attraction amongst all age groups. The desire to play games has turned children to be more techno savvy these days. E-Games are flexible and intuitive, it’s easy to use so you can spend your time creating games instead of programming them.

You can increase business effectiveness by easily adding more motivation and challenge to your learning programs. With the advent of E-Learning, even Training Games are transforming. Indeed, because Computer Games and Arcades are commonplace, instructional games may be the perfect candidate for e-learning events.

Trainers understand the value of a good game for engaging participants in the learning process, whether as pre-course materials, self-teaching tools, or content reviews. Most games draw on traditional game-show styles such as Jeopardy, or popular boardgames, including Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly. The question-and-answer format of those games proves ideal for self-assessment and memory building. When played in groups, games promote teambuilding and team spirit. More importantly, games alleviate learners’ anxiety about being evaluated.

A sophisticated programmed E-Game usually includes the following features:

·Easy, intuitive authoring interfaces.
· An array of different game types.
· Detailed Help files, sample games, and demonstrations.
· Cross-platform playback using the Flash web player.
· No messy software downloads or installation requirements.
· Options to create games from your web browser.
· You can choose from several skins for your games, including a custom skin that allows you to modify the colors.
· Full customization for any of the game types.
· Your own online Arcade system that allows you to group your games into custom multi-player arcades and invite players to compete.

The average age of an E-Game Player is 29 years and ninety two percent of all games are purchased by adults over the age of 18. 39% E-Game players are women. Computer and video game software sales grew 8% in 2003 to $ 7 billion in the following years and are expected to hike more. However, when compared to the movie industry this segment is still a small player.

In fiscal 2004, ended June 30, E-Games’ sales rose 11% to $8 million, and profit increased 9%, to $1.7 million, from a year earlier. It did have a loss of $184,000 in its 2005 fiscal first quarter, after sales were hurt when Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reduced shelf space it allocates to low-price PC games, E-Games says.

Some very sought after E-Games are as follows:

AirXonix: This is a 3-dimensional remake of the Xonix game. In the Xonix game you have to control a device, which is moving over the playing field whilst several monster-balls are wandering inside. The objective is to isolate the balls away from as much spare playing field as possible.

Buzzing Cars: Buzzing Cars is a totally crazy racing game where you’ll not only need to be fast but also smart. You must carry out various missions such as drive robots around, chase flying saucers, electrocute aliens and of course race against the clock. You can buy seven different cars with various properties. In every crash, the cars begin to lose parts, until eventually after enough is lost they completely fall apart.

Cross & Word Games: A compilation of three simple puzzle games previously released by E-Games in their early RomTech days. Crossword Mania is a set of 110 crossword puzzles and Word Search Mania has 222 word searches. Both of these pencil and paper to keyboard and monitor translations also have basic design tools for constructing your own puzzles. Word Connect Special Edition is a one board demo of a Scrabble clone where players try to form interlocking words on a board with lettered tiles.

Mahjongg Master: Enjoy the classic Chinese game of strategy with this full-featured version! You’ll find 18 original tile sets — everything from classic MahJongg tiles to all new designs! You can also choose from among 70 beautiful backgrounds including scenics, animals, textures, and much more. Plus great music, too! MahJongg Master is one of E-Games best-selling titles. There are millions of players around the world.

Marble Blast: In this arcade action game from independent publisher Garage Games, players take the control of marbles. The objective of the game is to race the marble through the 72 levels each containing moving platforms, dangerous hazards, sparkling treasures and power up enhancements, and complete it in record time.

Miniverse Minigolf: Two 9 hole mini golf courses for 1-4 players. One course is set on “Earth” and features putting through locations such as a construction site, a war zone, and a casino. The other course is set in space and includes a variety of science fiction obstacles like tele-porters and laser shields. Players can choose to control their putter by pushing or pulling the mouse and can select one of several different colors for their golf ball.

Pinball: E-Games’ Pinball is a 3D pinball simulation with three tables. 3D acceleration is used for all sorts of realistic effects like table glass, light halos, shadows, reflections of the ball on the table, and more. Standard pinball game play applies; knock down targets to light up bonuses, which can be further increased by multipliers.

Word Search Mania: A computerized version of the standard pencil and paper word search. Word Search Mania is a collection of 222 assorted puzzles with a variety of strange topics in varying degrees of difficulty. It also contains a tool for building puzzles from your own lists of words.

Of Books and Baby Boomers

The years between 1946 and 1964 not only constitute an era of the boomers, but they are also among the glory days of literature as books of several genres

and subjects tackled the very sensibilities of boomers, most of whom displayed an admirable love of reading.

In the dawn of the information age, the boomers’ select books started gathering dust but the younger generation of echo boomers also did take the time to

read the pages of yesteryears.

The great writers of a preceding era are almost always put on a literary pedestal by their followers. But it is not by tradition, or fad, or blind faith that

today’s readers held with utmost awe and respect the books read by their predecessors. Think analogically of having listened to an aging and experienced

adult and reading from the baby boomer authors.

One of the most popular books in the boomer period was published in 1946 as a literary journalistic piece— Hiroshima by John Hersey. Hersey narratively

presented true-to-life accounts of Hiroshima residents, a portion of whom who survived the Hiroshima bombing.   The reader steps into a bomb-ridden far away

world, that Hershey fashioned using words that filled the reader with cutting terror.

Another literary piece of the boomer period that made it into one of the most-read books is Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus, which was published in 1947. People

were not only discussing Faustus but they were equally interested in the evil spirit to whom the German legend sold his soul, Mephistopheles.

Another book, which is even more magical and fantastical than Doctor Faustus, was published in 1951— J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings. The trilogy’s

movie adaptation in the new millennium was an instant success. The commendation credited to the fictionist who imagined the Middle Earth and presented it

before us in his gorgeously descriptive writing.

Only a few geniuses are born in every period but the boomer years exceeded what their followers and predecessors expected of them. Their contributions not

only to the literary field manifest until today and will continue to reverberate for generations to come.

What is the first difference between movies and games? Games are active action and movies are passive. They provoke in our brains different psychic reactions like the walk or the standing on one place. Second, movies have one strict plotline and the game plot line may be changed with our actions or different ways to come to the final point. From the first sight not important but indeed fundamental differences between games and movies lead Hollywood producers to a fault thinking that if they take a plot (and name!) of successful video game, couple of famous actors – the highly profitable movie is done – people will run to cinemas fighting for tickets. Not really… Yes, part of the public (mostly fans of the game) will go see the movie but after disappointment – critics, bad critical information in internet, conversations will be spread across the country. What kind of reputation movie is going to have?

Well, I’ll give you the list of best games based on movies been made and the list of worst games based on movies by internet user’s opinion.

Best games-to-movies: King Kong, Spiderman, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Lego Star War, Star War Battlefront 2, The Warriors, From Russia with Love (James Bond), The Matrix: Path of Neo, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Godfather. These games (you probably played half of them) worth attention.

Worst games-to movies list: Friday the 13th, Shrek 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws: Unleashed, Ghostbusters II, The Blues Brothers, Street Fighter: The Movie, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Enter the Matrix, Iron Man.

Of course, you may have your own opinion as for “best” and “worst” but still the fact is a fact most of games to movies and movies to games are fail! Though Hollywood is keep trying to entertain us with new movies (as well as to make as much money as possible on naive gamers) or perhaps it is a lack of imagination which is recently observed in last Hollywood movies. Each genre has a standard scheme with sequence of events, when you already know the end of the movie at the beginning. You probably will watch a few movies like this but then you will feel boredom. Are there no talented people in Hollywood who can write a genius screen play? Directors, do you think that fresh genius idea worth less then used and d worn one? You think just about commercial part and popularity? And what about the art?

A Look At Mobile Phone Games

Most people these days own a cell phone. More than likely along with it’s many other features the phone came with a few games to play. If you do own a cell phone, give your games a chance. You just might find yourself playing the games a lot more. Games can be downloaded off the Internet and often for free. They may suit your style more if you get bored with the games on your phone. Games like sports, puzzle, trivia, and adventure can all be found online. If you do decide to play free games, or even pay for some games you are not likely to be disappointed. Mobile phone games can be a lifesaver when you are stuck in situation where you have to wait long time.

In our technology advanced world today it is easy to see why cell phones are so popular. People are seen everywhere talking on their phones, texting messages, checking e-mail or searching the Internet. While all these things are great, they cost money. So when you are just bored and need something to do, it is better to play a cell phone game that doesn’t rack up minutes. Many different people ranging from young kids to adults play mobile games. Cell phone games can be played anytime, while gaming systems and computers often can only be played at home. At an appointment, in traffic, waiting for dinner, on a plane or bus trip, or waiting in line cell phone games can kill time and make the wait much more manageable.

Snake, memory, and logic games were some of the first games to come out for mobile phones. Since then the gaming market has become much bigger and the games have gotten much better. Cell phone games can be downloaded for free from many sites on the internet and can be found easily by using search engines like Google and Yahoo. Other games can be purchased for flat fee or at a monthly rate for bundled games. Some of the games work through your phones web browser so internet access for you phone may be necessary. Classic games like chess, tetrus, sports, puzzle, and card games are just some of the games that can be found online.

With interactive capabilities on your mobile phone it may be possible to integrate games. Phones with Bluetooth can connect you to nearby game players and some games use text messaging in their games. This can make the mobile phone games much more exciting and fun, since the new players can make the game more challenging. New phone styles that have bigger screens, better color, and graphics have made cell phone games better and have increased the mobile gaming market. In the future more people will probably play cell phone games more, especially if the prices of the games become more reasonable.

If you do own a cell phone, chances are it came with a few games. You can whip out your cell phone at anytime and play a game if you need to kill some time. Even so many people still don’t really play their cell phone games. Some reasons for this may be that the games their phone came with are boring or not much fun, they spend more time sending messages or talking on the phone, or they just don’t think to play the games. Mobile phone games have become more popular in recent years though, due to better phones and better gaming options.

Books In Translation

Books have been translated for hundreds of years now, but in today’s global market translation is becoming ever more common. Whilst at one time it was chiefly works of religious significance which saw widespread translation, today it is common for any book which is expected to reach fairly high sales to be translated into other languages.

The Harry Potter series of books is one example of this. Another would be the works of Paulo Coelho. The Lord of the Rings, the works of Hermann Hesse, and those of Haruki Murakami, have also all seen translation into a great many languages. Given that it is so common an occurrence in today’s world some interesting questions seem to arise. Firstly, do the different translations all have slightly differing qualities to them and affect their readers in subtly varying ways, and do we lose anything in the translation (even in a good translation) which makes the work somewhat different from its original source?

Whilst these two questions seem the same they are in fact slightly different – somewhat like two faces of the same coin. If the answer is that in the translation we get something different to the original work, then the answer to whether readers of different translations are affected differently may also be yes. I do not profess to know the answers to these questions myself, but I would like to raise the topic and make a few points that may generate ideas in whoever reads this.

Whilst every effort is taken to translate every aspect of a work in a localization process, inevitably there is the chance of something being lost. Firstly, the book you read will be an interpretation of the original work. Although the translator will attempt to translate as accurately as they can the original text, simply in their reading it they will get their own impressions. These impressions will, in turn, colour their translation. It would be impossible for a translation to be completed without some sort of subtle alteration because of this.

Then there is the question of whether the language of origin and that into which the work is translated are also wholly compatible. Language can be a very tricky creature and when one language tries to become another all sorts of problems can be met such as with the rhythm of the writing, as well as the colloquial nature of individual words.

However, it is also true that world-famous texts are understood globally and often opinions on the work are also global. Given this, it must be the case that translated works have a great deal in common. It would also be fair to point out that large multi-national publishers would not pay huge amounts of money to a translator who cannot accurately convey the original work in a different language.

So it seems that there are potential difficulties within the translation process, and the possibility exists that something could be lost to the reader of a translation, but translators are experts in their field which is a significant combatant to this fact. In truth, it’s hard to say whether the work may be misunderstood in any significant way, but there must, at the very least, be some minor differences in how an original would read to a native-speaker, and how a translation would read to a speaker of that language.
